Keep crime out of sport

Oxford Research is helping the Council of Europe in the fight against criminal manipulation of sport competitions (known as match-fixing). It is a joint project carried out in cooperation with several other partners, including the International Olympic Committee and Interpol. The project is Oxford Research’s fourth study on match-fixing making them a leader in fighting match-fixing in Europe.

Manipulation of sport competitions is one of the greatest threats to professional sport now and in the future. Matchfixing did not get much publicity 5-10 years ago but has increasingly been in the spotlight in the last couple of years. The Council of Europe has identified matchfixing as a serious issue and has developed a Convention on combating manipulation of sport competitions (match-fixing). Based on this, the Council of Europe has initiated "Keep Crime Out of Sports" (KCOOS) to share knowledge of how to combat matchfixing between the participating countries and to support countries in implementing the Convention into national legislation. Furthermore, KCOOS seeks to create a network of national platforms with knowledge of match-fixing and facilitate exchange of good practices.

Oxford Research has, based on our extensive knowledge and prior experience on the subject, been assigned the responsibility of creating a handbook on good practices and educational programs on the Convention. In addition, Oxford Research is supporting the implementation of regional seminars, study visits and expert missions focusing on inspiring EU-countries to fight match-fixing. A fruitful kick-off meeting on the 9th and 10th of February in Brussels officially launched the project.
