Economic impact of lunch vouchers

The lunch benefit tax policy has a positive economic impact for the Finnish economy, says the report published by Oxford Research Finland. Even if the tax benefit reduces public sector tax income by EUR 17 million, growth within the restaurant industry covers the public sector losses completely. All in all, the change is so remarkable that the total impact of the lunch benefit tax policy is clearly beneficial to the economy.

Eating a hot meal during the working day has long been tradition in Finland and lunch vouchers were introduced to the Finnish market in 1974. Currently the lunch voucher market is approximately EUR 240 million annually, which means around 27 million lunches - around 124 000 daily voucher users.

Oxford Research was commissioned by Edenred Finland to study the economic impact of the lunch benefit tax policy. CEO Arttu Vainio presented the results of the report on 15 October in an event, which included the Minister of Justice and Employment Jari Lindström and health and science journalist Christopher Wanjek as speakers.
